ATS 2024: Using Continuous Cough Monitoring to Assess Bronchiectasis Therapy

Summary

This is the first report demonstrating the feasibility of continual cough monitoring to assess the clinical impact of bronchiectasis therapy. The average rate of cough decreased significantly in all patients, suggesting that the airway clearance protocol at National Jewish is effective in rapidly reducing coughing.

Cough, one of the most problematic manifestations of bronchiectasis, is often treatedwith multimodal interventions designed to improve airway clearance. The recent development ofacoustic cough monitors allow for the continual passive monitoring of cough in individuals. In this pilotstudy we used Hyfe’s CoughTracker to demonstrate the feasibility and impact of various methods toinduce and reduce coughing.
